A procedure called scaling and root planing is often recommended as the initial step in the treatment of periodontal (gum) infection. This procedure is used as a complete treatment for the early stages of periodontal infection and as a pre-surgical treatment for those patients with more advanced infection.
This procedure begins with the administration of local anesthetic to prevent discomfort during the treatment. Special cleaning instruments are then placed gently beneath the gum tissues to remove plaque bacteria and tartar from the root surfaces. The roots are also smoothed to remove poisons that become embedded in the root by the bacterial plaque. This lets the gum tissue heal and reattach itself to the root of the tooth. Instruction in the proper method of cleaning your mouth is a vital aspect of this treatment. Dr. Cushman and her staff will thoroughly review the correct methods to clean your mouth as part of your treatment.
In certain cases, Dr. Cushman may recommend that antibiotic medications be placed beneath the gums during this procedure. These medications can enhance the healing achieved by scaling and root planing. The necessity of these medications is determined on a case by case basis.
